Sharks Vintage

Be prepared when walking into Sharks Vintage to be overwhelmed. You might want to walk over to the Pete's next door and get a coffee first: you may be shopping for awhile. Although perhaps lacking in space, this adorable Telegraph boutique makes up in quantity what may be missing in square footage. Every available inch is crammed full of amazing retro finds at surprisingly affordable prices - this is the East Bay after all, not one of those over priced San Francisco deals.

What impressed me the most about Sharks was the range of styles and types of clothing offered. They not only carry your typical selection of cute dresses and cardigans from the 50's and 60's, but there's an entire shelf of just boots, a huge selection of retro shades and accessories, and a wide range of eras to choose from when selecting your vintage attire. My favorite finds were an adorable 1960's cream lace doily dress with brown velvet trim (which looked surprisingly like the Jovovich-Hawk for Target collection) and an adorable neon pink t-shirt dress which would be perfect for the touches of neon that are a must have this season. Pair it with last year's leggings or skinny jeans and you have an outfit.

Recap. Friday Night's event Inamorata & Dapper Trunk Shows!

Another night of fun at one of our favorite College Ave. Boutiques, Inamorata. There was a full house ready to view the Julieta Miro accessories Trunk Show. We were treated to a glass of wine, a colorful array of leather belts, and a selection of unique chain link jewelry. Who is Julieta Miro? Julieta Miro is an Argentinian designer who creates stand out accessories in leather, stones and metals. None of the items in the current collection are run of the mill, and each item is so versatile as to be paired with a number of styles.

And, this time out, Fashion Forward also ventured into mens fashion by heading over to Dapper where a DJ was spinning music for their sunglasses trunk show. Our fave line spotted? Original Penguin Eye wear! Plus, the sales staff was really knowledgeable and friendly. Be sure to keep any eye out for a future post with more info. on Dapper and what you can find there.

Dynamic Duo. Pretty Penny Vintage & Saturn Records

Classic rock and vintage frocks? You can't go wrong pairing music and fashion, and Pretty Penny and Saturn records have struck a chord with their shared space on College Ave.

The headquarters for Saturn Records is located upstairs in this shop, and while they sell most of their rare and valuable records online, you can browse through a pretty good collection downstairs. A fun atomosphere is created, I mean really what better way to shop classic tracks than surrounded by decades worth of vintage stock? And, with Pretty Penny carrying one of a kind items- sunglasses, bags, belts, dresses, tees, and a great selection of shoes- it's a must shop spot. So, before you head out to hear your favorite local band, turn it up a notch and pick up a killer vintage piece at Pretty Penny.

Get More Style Mileage!

How? With items that can be styled in multiple ways. The fashion world has come a long way since the days of zip on zip off coat sleeves, and tear away short-pants. Just take a look at a few of the items that can be found here in Oakland.

This bag from Inamorata Boutique can be carried three ways, as a shoulder bag, as a tote, or as an over-sized clutch. It's a perfectly luxe looking faux leather bag large enough to carry whatever you may need for your busy day, including a large water bottle and a few magazines to read on BART.

And now that you have the perfect bag, what about a perfect sweater?

This comfy, yet stylish wrap, from Crush Boutique on College Ave., will change along with your every mood.

Wear it loose with a little slip dress. Wrap it around and wear with your favorite jeans. You can really get creative with this one! Belt it. Twist it. Or, wear it as a shoulder shrug. This is one item to pack on that next out of town trip.

Get Down at Down At Lulu's

When cruising down Telegraph Ave past the Whole Foods and before the snazzy Temescal neighborhood of Oakland, you don't really expect to find a lot beyond some late night snack spots like the Smokehouse and Jack in the Box. But next time you have an urge for a burger keep your eye out for the bright pink Down At Lulu's Vintage Boutique and Salon.

Co-Owned by Tina Lucchesi and Seth Bogart, the adorable vintage boutique is also the place to go for a great haircut. When walking in be prepared to walk out with hair hipper than you could have ever imagined and a new closet full of inexpensive but awesome vintage finds. (See the image below of my adorable new black leather purse with gold buckle. Cute and small, but surprisingly roomy inside, and it was in perfect condition!)

Seth and Tina decided to take the plunge and start their own business after years of working together at someone else's salon. They also shared a love of thrifting and junk selling and decided to combine their two interests in one great location. Both are in bands and are avid flea market hunters, and the stores decor, clothing, and accessories reflects their style. Keep an eye on their myspace for updates about sales and occasional art and fashion shows they hold at Lulu's. And don't forget to head over there next time you need a new do!

Dual Purpose Products

We couldn't bring you our favorite multiple personality stores without also mentioning a few dual purpose products we recently discovered. If you're anything like me, you'd rather sleep a few extra minutes than take the time to put on mascara and eyeshadow on the same day, so buying products that can be used in more ways than one makes it unnecessary to choose between rosy cheeks or a red pout - now you can have both!

Sephora seems to be the master of multi-tasking and has two products that we couldn't resist trying:

Philosophy's Amazing Grace perfumed shampoo, shower gel, and bubble bath has a subtle fragrance and works equally well for hair and body, making my sometimes frizzy curls extra ringletty and my skin super soft.

Bare Minerals All-Over Face Color in Rose Radiance is the lazy girl's dream product. Brush it on the checks and face for an all-over soft glow, layer it under lipgloss for light color on your lips, or even use it as eyeshadow.

Benefit's Benetint is also great for when you're running late and want to look extra pretty. Spread it on your lips for a beautiful pink tint or smear a little on the apples of your checks for a rosy glow.

Loving it! Inamorata Boutique & Beauty Bar

What's not to love about Inamorata Boutique? Super cute clothes and a beauty bar: what more could you ask for when trying to look fabulous?

Fashion Forward recently attended an evening event at Inamorata, where with champagne in hand we perused the clothing and got mini manicures (by Bisou Nails another College Ave. business present at the event).

We also had the opportunity to speak with Arabella- Inamorata's owner- and talk with her a little about what led her to open a shop and beauty bar. After working in retail and cosmetics for over 11 years- for companies like M.A.C , Lancome and Chanel- it was time to do something she always wanted to do: open up her own store. With a degree in Fashion and Marketing and expertise in make-up (including experience as a freelance stylist) it's no wonder that you can find great stylish items at Inamorata.

And just what is stocked in shop? Smaller design lines with great price points hand picked for great quality and consistency of style; fun colorful cosmetics perfect for your next night out; as well as great customer service!

This Week

This week is Multiple Personality Week for Fashion Forward. Stay tuned for salons that moonlight as vintage boutiques, dual purpose accessories, and products that can be used in a multitude of ways!

Welcome to FASHION FORWARD - EAST BAY a blog devoted to bringing you the best fashion finds this side of the bridge. Oakland, Berkeley, and other cities in the East Bay aren't exactly the first names on the list of fashion capitols, but we want to show you that fashion can be found in unexpected places.

In this blog expect to find featured shops, fave finds, deals, and a little fashion and beauty advice.

Fashion Forward - EB is:
Grace Blasco and Suzzanna Matthews-Amanzio

After being born in Berkeley, Grace spent her childhood in Sonoma County, but returned to her birthplace to study English at Cal. Now with a degree and a ridiculous amount of literature on her bookshelf, she spends her time exploring the local music and fashion scene, embroidering tea towels and ashamedly watching reality TV.

Suzzanna is an east coast transplant who studied English at Mills College in Oakland, and now calls Oakland home. When she is not out exploring local shops and discovering new designers, she is watching cheesy 80's TV shows, cooking enchiladas, or daydreaming about one day designing her own line of clothes.
