Blast From the Past

Sometimes when you're at a loss for how to wear this season's styles it's best to look back at the fashion icons who originally mastered the look for inspiration.

No one since has defined the high waisted trouser look as thoroughly as Katharine Hepburn. Perfect for those of you blessed with long legs, this tailored look has certainly made a come back this season. Pair it with a funky blazer and a neon top for a new take on a classic look.

If you can't quite figure out how to wear those cocktail shorts that every designer from Vera Wang to Carolina Herrera seems to be obsessed with this season, take a trip back to the Roaring 20's and discover the style of Louise Brooks, the darling of the silent screen. Try them in a flirty floral with a pair of wedge sandals and big sunglasses for a brighter take on Louise's sexy flapper look.

Oscar nominees Ellen Page and Marion Cotillard certainly channeled a little Louise with long pearl necklaces and retro dresses for their Oscar looks. Wear a few strands with jeans and your funky blazer for an edgier touch.

If the sleek flapper look is not really your thing, take a cue from Grace Kelly, the ultimate in sophistication and grace (pun intended) when trying to decide which full-skirted style works best for you. If you still need more help, netflix 1954's Rear Window, where Grace plays a fashion consultant, providing numerous lessons to Jimmy Stewart and the audience on how to look fabulous.

Now next time you head over to Sharks Vintage, or any of the other numerous vintage boutiques the East Bay has to offer, don't be overwhelmed by all the different styles and eras. A few key pieces from your favorite time period paired with a few highlights of the season are all you need.
