San Pablo Ave: the new Vintage Mecca

You may have noticed driving down San Pablo Ave lately that a surprisingly large number of vintage stores have popped up, especially where the Ave meets Dwight. What you may not know is that all of these vintage stores are connected.

Twisters Vintage, Icon Vintage, and Dolled Up Vintage are all within a block of each other, and along with Magnet and Herringbone Apothecary on Shattuck make up The East Bay Style Collective. Stay tuned in May for info on their 4th Fashion Show, which is held in the parking lot behind Magnet.

Although these three vintage stores are literally within spitting distance of each other, don't think each store is just a repeat of the other. Each one has it's own unique flavor and selection.

Twisters Vintage (look for the bright orange building!) was named the best place for vintage by the East Bay Express and is a fantastic place to go to look for great vintage touches to supplement your wardrobe. Co-owner Heidi Spanier takes special care to select pieces that are relevant to current trends, with a focus on great finds from the 60's. But the store also has a stock of great accessories and pieces ranging from the 1880's to the 1980's. Heidi even spent the time to show me an awesome black velvet jacket from the turn of the century that could have just walked off the runway.

Dolled Up Vintage, Twisters' neighbor and business partner, is the place to go for hats and accessories. Twisters and Dolled Up also have a combined business called Feather Vintage, which focuses on designer vintage pieces and also has a selection of their own designs. Feather Vintage has a website, but you can also find select designer pieces at both Twisters and Dolled Up. At Dolled Up they're spread throughout the store, and at Twisters Heidi keeps a special rack of Feather finds. Just ask, and at either locale they'll show you their favorite pieces.

Icon Vintage is where you should take your significant other. With select pieces for guys, Icon is also home to Retro Diva a boutique featuring lingerie and fetish pieces. If you have the time, take a tour of all three locations. Expect to find beautiful merchandising, friendly service, and great pieces at each.

And don't forget to stay tuned for information about the 4th East Bay Style Collective Fashion Show, which is scheduled to be held on May 17th at 8pm. Sign up for any of the stores' email lists for more information closer to the date.
